Hi everyone! I am so excited to be a part of the King Gillette art exhibit and sale once again. I first heard of this group of artists and their mission when I moved to the San Fernando valley. Visiting my neighbor one day I was struck by many gorgeous paintings hanging on his walls. He was a collector of many paintings from Allied Artists! So I knew I had to paint with them and have been doing so regularly for many years.

This will be my second time and I’ll be showing a lot of new landscapes all dolled up in frames and priced to sell! Most paintings are of the surrounding Santa Monica Mountains recreation area. Hills trees and pathways all through my eyes, I’m proud to unveil many new paintings.

The ranch is a gorgeous place and you can easily spend a lot of your day visiting the visitors center and strolling through the grounds. So I hope you’ll also stop by and see some beautiful art from all the artists I’ll be showing alongside.

Stop by and say hello!

Warmly,

Vickie

Listening to the trees – I smell them –It’s the best smell and I don’t know why I’ve never been here before – the tree above me even spoke to me – it dropped a leaf on my blanket as if to say hello. Ok I’ll come back. No matter what the limitation – we show what we are within it and what we do though bound by it. There is always something to be found even in the tiniest, tightest little dark corner – in fact it may illuminate our true nature!

The above image is an excerpt from one of my sketchbooks. Working in North Hollywood I would take my lunch breaks at a small park nearby. I needed to feel grass and be in nature for at least a small time each day. This is when I started to paint during my lunch breaks and it grew to be a pretty significant way to grow in my art while I had very little time because of my full-time day job. It also helped my soul and my heart to grow a little bit lighter.

This painting truly was a moment of joy to create. The theme for this show fit perfectly as it was created on a particularly sunny and warm day and was the first allied artists paint out meeting in person since the pandemic started. So double the joy for me.

I had been to this lake many times to hike and hang out with my family. But this was the first time I really dove into the beauty of the lake in my painting. Usually, I ponder the beauty of the lake but this day I really looked – it was an unreal blue that captivated my imagination. As soon as I saw the green reflections of tall trees in the blue ripples, I knew what this painting was about. I like to include a small “hook”. Something that really grabs me. Sometimes it’s very apparent and sometimes much more subtle. For this painting it was subtle. I hope you enjoy looking at this as much as I do and that you can take away some peace and serenity almost feeling the chatter of families and artists as they spent their day looking upon this beautiful scene nature provided us with.

Please take a moment to view the show when it opens! Thanks so much! Exhibition dates for this show, “Moments of Joy” are Monday, June 21-Wednesday, September 1, 2021

I’ll virtually see you there!

It’s so hard to keep going but it’s so worth it.

Last month I tried one of those challenges but I made sure it fit what I really love. A fantastic group of artists called Warrior Painters was a group I had been watching for a while and when the challenge presented itself I was in. So April was all about small gouache studies.

Every day in April. I was already doing them but not consistently every day so this seemed the perfect way to take it up a notch. It was a great practice and now in May I finally got to my oils again after a couple of small injuries and well life taking over my attention and got out there. Feeling a little nervous i just made sure to show up. and it turns out those studies really did strengthen my muscle for painting…I didn’t feel as fussy and was able to lay in the whole thing more confidently, I felt like i got my values better and was able to traverse some tricky color shifts.

Yeah, it’s a journey and there will be bumps along the way, but in the end it is more than worth it.

As an example, let me show you a recent oil painting I did. I don’t think this is necessarily my best but it does bear testimony of the continuous practice of what I’ve come to call my “Mini-Masters.” Those small studies have really been helping me. Although people have told me that I “make it look easy,” it is anything but. It takes utmost concentration and a disciplined dedication to craft; it is hard work, and just like any type of hard work, it always pays off. More importantly, once you’re there in the midst of the process, that stream of imagination and creativity, it is pure bliss.
